please and thank you
The effect of “please” and “thank you” when expressed sincerely and appropriately, is to validate the receiver’s worth as a person. Children are especially dependent upon the validation of their elders because they lack the ability to validate themselves. When we validate them in the right way, we help them to outgrow this dependency on us to the point where they respect themselves as independent human beings. They are then capable of validating themselves and others. As the circle of validation grows, we achieve a society where problems are resolved cooperatively between people who respect themselves and each other.
